Meet Meraki - Lessons from a wild heart

Meraki and I!

Meraki and Whisper

Meraki and Whisper living their best lives ever!

Meet Meraki -

Meraki came into my life eight years ago, carrying a story I could never fully know.

She is a wild American mustang, gathered from the western range after spending the first years of her life in freedom with her family. Like many mustangs, she arrived with memories that could not be explained in words. Loud sounds, unfamiliar places, and even the distant rhythm of helicopters would remind her of a world she had been forced to leave behind.

At first, we were simply two strangers trying to understand one another.

Trust did not come quickly. It was built one quiet moment at a time. One patient step. One gentle touch. One choice to try again.

There were difficult seasons. We both experienced moments that tested our confidence and required us to begin again from the very beginning. Those experiences taught me that true partnership is never built on control. It is built on listening, patience, consistency, and grace.

Over time, something extraordinary happened.

The frightened mustang who once questioned every unfamiliar sound became the horse who now greets me with a gentle nicker across the pasture. She stands quietly while I wrap my arms around her neck, and together we enjoy the peaceful moments we once wondered if we would ever find.

Today, Meraki lives beside her companion, Whisper, who is a beautiful girl with DSLD that we rescued from slaughter. They spend their days beneath open skies, under grandfather oaks. I no longer ask Meraki to become what I imagined when she first came home. Instead, I simply ask her to be herself.

She has taught me that healing rarely happens all at once. It grows slowly through patience, faith, and countless small acts of trust.

The name Meraki means to leave a piece of your soul in your work.

She has certainly left hers in mine.

Every BlackPony painting carries something she first taught me: that strength can be gentle, courage often looks like quiet persistence, and the deepest beauty is found in relationships built on trust rather than fear.

She will always be my greatest teacher, my constant inspiration, and my beloved friend.
